Casita Mexicana snatched up my heart with Frida, and sealed the deal with the food.
Black Beans and Pico de Gallo
When I chose to move to Germany, one thing I was going to miss was Mexican food. Not the sloppy sauces of Colorado and Texas but the fresh citrus and cilantro crunch of my childhood meals in Southern California. Within six months of trying to accept the loss I found my Ponce de Leon, Casita Mexican. Ahhh, everything was going to be all right.
Walking in I heard the chatter of the staff speaking Southern Hemisphere Spanish, not the th-th-th, of proper Castillian, but the sing songy lullaby that made me feel at home here, in their Casita.
Standing at the bar waiting to be seated I saw her from across the room. She was watching me through the mirror on the wall. The symbolism was not wasted on me. A full wall mural of Frida is painted on the back wall but I was looking at her image in a mirror.
Frida Kuhlo is known as originating the selfy. Her father had placed a mirror above her as she laid bed ridden from a severe back injury. There I was looking at her through a mirror. I contemplated her contributions to the art world and her life story while sipping on a Margarita Sensual, made with passion fruit. Yum.
The rest of the meal was all about celebrating guacamole, chips and salsa and of course, black beans and pico de gallo. My life in Köln was almost complete. India Pale Ale craft beer is another story all together.
