It has been a bugger of a year. Now, during Christmas time of 2020, the Christmas markets are as quiet and subdued as many of our moods.
I spoke with someone who had been involved in the Heumarkt Christmas Market. He explained that one of the reasons they decided not to build this year was the cost. Over a million Euros are required to set up the ice skating rink and dozens of stands and booths, which include a two-story chalet and a merry-go-round. If the city were to close the festivities due to Covid 19, the loss would be astronomical. So, they decided to pass this year. I have also been told that the booths cost over 20,000 euro to rent. I can only imagine the frustration of paying that kind of money and then not allow customers in.
Living in the Altstadt of Köln, the Christmas Markets have seemed like my personal celebration. The people and smells, the lights and the sounds and the food and drink surrounded by trees and singing make my soul sweet. This year it is only quiet and darkness. I wonder if Köln, and the world, will find it’s old soul of celebration. I wonder if Carnival chaos will comeback. Will Glastonbury, Burning Man and Coachella be resurrected? Will I be able to hug my friends and family and wish them a Merry Christmas?
Until then, I hope for kindness towards one another abound from this day to all days.
Merry Christmas
Christmas of the past
