I should know more German than I do. But sometimes the mistakes are the best.
Late one evening we finished the night off at The Copper Pot. A simple Kölsch or a Guiness at an Irish Bar seemed like a fine place for a night cap. We were correct. Drinking, talking and laughing with new strangers that were developing into friends at Polaroid speeds made for a wonderful evening.
Then, the drama started. Confusion swept the room. A tie breaker needed to be performed but I couldn't determine why or how come? I asked a smiling lad, What's happening?". He responded with, "Pipkris". I asked again and his response was similar, "Popekreis". I dug down deep into any German word that could possibly fit. I was at a loss. Befuddled, I asked his friend. His friend, he looked at me as if I were daft and said, "Pop Quiz".
Of Course! "Pop Quiz"spoken with an Irish accent, in Germany and received by an American with a near empty beer would sound exactly as the man said, "Pipkris". It makes perfect sense now!
