Spending time in the Old Town of Köln, I have spotted all the tourist traps. I have been avoiding these establishments. Then one day, because of the rain and having seen the sheltered patio in the interior of the building we dashed inside. What we found is what we had been missing!
My husband is vegan for his own health reasons. This allows him to make exceptions for cheese on pizza and here he found the Pizza Tomasso. Oh my lordy, did he hit the jackpot. I myself am not vegan, and I was more than pleased as well!! Then, for the extra surprise, there were great gin and tonics. Oh, and did I mention the amazing tiramisu. We hit the mother load.
So, great food and drink, in an amazing indoor garden, near our home, what more could we ask for? A friendly atmosphere! The most senior server is Lillo and he is unassuming, sweet and professional. He surprised by remembering our names, that Dave doesn’t like ice in his drink and that he always orders the Pizza Tomasso. He also knows that I like my steak rare on the inside and seared to crunchy perfection on the outside.
Another server we have enjoyed is Dipu. Dipu is from India and his friends, or the Three Musketeers as he refers to them, have been dining at the same time as us. One of his friends is from Tunisia and the other from Hungary. We were able to share some drinks and learn about their great friendship. These three men, who are from different places, have found a bond of trust, respect and brotherhood. What a joy it has been to know them and to watch such a friendship. It makes us feel as if we were part of their extended family. We are very pleased with our impromptu diversion into what we thought was a tourist trap to find great food and drink and see friendships that can be made when people find their commonality rather than their differences.
